NRA Personal Protection In The Home

Age: 21+ | Cost: $155 | Length of Course: 8 Hours | Pre-requisites: Experienced shooters

Experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

The NRA Personal Protection in the Home course teaches you everyday things you can do to make your home less attractive to criminals. If an unauthorized entry should occur while you and your family are in the home, this course teaches you effective skills to:

  • Avoid confrontation and minimize bodily risk through cover, concealment, and planning.
  • Master concepts such as center-of-mass, shooting under stress, and shooting in close proximity to obstructions.
  • Effectively work with 911 and responding law enforcement personnel.
  • Increase your chances for a positive outcome.

This course is an excellent 2nd course to take once you have completed the NRA Basic Pistol course.

Course Description

The NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.

Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

This class will leverage and utilize the shooting simulator for various drills and scenarios to help create a more interactive and stimulating training environment. These drills provide excellent dry fire exercises in a safe controlled classroom environment before conducting live fire drills at the pistol range.

Lesson Plan:
  • Lesson I: Introduction to Personal Protection In The Home
  • Lesson II: Basic Defensive Pistol Skills
  • Lesson III: Firearms and the Law – Possession and Ownership; the Use of Deadly Force.
  • Lesson IV: Strategies For Home Safety And Responding To A Violent Confrontation
  • Lesson V: Selecting A Pistol For Self Defense
  • Lesson VI: Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities.
  • Lesson VII: Course Review and Examination.

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

Materials Provided by Virtual Target:

  • Targets
  • Ammunition and accessories can be purchased from Virtual Target at a discount rate
Materials Provided by Student:
  • Handgun in a defensive caliber - 38 special, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, etc. and owner’s manual.
  • Ammunition for their defensive handgun. Students should expect to shoot approx. 100 rounds of ammunition, 2 magazines or speed loader for 38 special and magazine pouches.
  • Comfortable hat with a brim, comfortable clothing and foot-gear (no flip-flops or sandals).
  • Knee pads.
  • Ear and eye protection.

The Blackhawk Holster with the index finger release will not be used in the classroom, range or on duty.



Important Notice: Firearms must be kept in a case until instructed otherwise and no ammunition will be allowed in the classroom. Please leave ammunition in your vehicle until you are instructed to retrieve it for ‘live fire’ exercises.

Advanced courses are performed at an outdoor range and may be subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. If courses are cancelled, they will be re-scheduled at the earliest possible time. Students will have the option to re-schedule at a later date or receive a full refund.
